Problem
Traditional water disinfection methods, primarily chlorine-based, generate potentially carcinogenic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and face increasing regulatory pressure for reduced usage. This necessitates a safer, more sustainable alternative that can effectively eliminate pathogens without adverse environmental or health consequences.
Solution
Symbient is developing a novel catalytic process for the cost-effective, high-yield production of Performic Acid (PFA), a superior water disinfectant. PFA offers a non-toxic profile, spontaneously decomposes into benign compounds, and does not produce hazardous DBPs, addressing the limitations of conventional disinfectants. Our technology enables the mass adoption of PFA as a sustainable solution to meet the growing global demand for clean water while minimizing environmental impact and complying with evolving regulations.
Target Audience
Symbient targets municipal water treatment facilities, industrial water users, and wastewater management entities seeking compliant and environmentally responsible disinfection solutions.
Features
- Catalytic technology for cost-effective and high-yield Performic Acid (PFA) production.
- PFA exhibits non-toxic properties, posing no adverse effects on human health or aquatic life.
- PFA does not generate hazardous disinfection byproducts (DBPs) commonly associated with chlorine.
- PFA spontaneously decomposes into non-toxic compounds, simplifying residual management.
- High efficacy in eliminating bacteria and viruses, even at low concentrations.
- Lower greenhouse gas footprint compared to chlorine-based water purification methods.
