Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a progressive eye disease that starts in childhood and is characterized by worsening distance vision and excessive eye elongation. Any degree of myopia increases the risk of sight-threatening complications, including cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and myopic macular degeneration. Existing optical corrections only improve distance vision and do not slow eye elongation.

Myoptechs is developing a soft contact lens utilizing a patent-pending Faceted Optical System™ designed to slow the progression of myopia while providing clear vision. The lens maximizes myopic defocus, an optical signal beneficial for slowing myopia progression, more effectively than early-generation technologies. Retinal imaging simulations demonstrate that the Myoptechs optical design provides three times the myopic defocus compared to multifocal contact lenses currently indicated to slow myopia progression. This technology aims to reduce the short- and long-term vision implications of myopia.
