Current train positioning systems often have errors of several meters, especially in areas where satellite signals are weak or unavailable. This inaccuracy can lead to track workers being directed to the wrong location and render valuable infrastructure data unusable. Traditional methods of railway infrastructure monitoring also expose track engineers to risky on-track working conditions.
Solution
Machines With Vision provides a computer vision-based system for millimeter-accurate mapping of railway infrastructure, enabling precise positioning of track features in real-time, even in GNSS-denied environments. The RailLoc technology creates a map of rail track features using visible characteristics such as ballast structure and the orientation of bolts, cracks, and marks on sleepers. This allows infrastructure monitoring data to be positioned with sub-meter accuracy across the entire railway network. The Fault Navigator application, underpinned by RailLoc, directs track workers to specific faults with visual and audible prompts, improving safety and reducing the time spent locating defects.
