Problem
The production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), biochemicals, biomaterials, and bioplastics is often limited by the high costs and inflexibility associated with processing diverse and mixed biomass feedstocks. Existing pretreatment methods can be energy-intensive, require specialized enzymes, and may not efficiently extract sugars from various waste streams, hindering the economic viability of bio-based products.
Solution
Erg Bio has developed Aspire™ Technology, a low-temperature solvent pretreatment process that efficiently extracts cellulosic material from diverse biomass sources, including agricultural waste, forestry residues, and municipal solid waste. This feedstock-agnostic approach allows for the processing of over 30 different feedstocks, even in mixtures, mitigating price fluctuations and ensuring year-round operation. Paired with consolidated bioprocessing, the technology yields low-cost fermentable sugars that can be used to produce cost-competitive SAF and other bio-based products. The process also recovers unmodified lignin as a co-product for potential high-value applications.
Target Audience
The primary target audience includes companies in the aviation, biochemical, biomaterial, and bioplastic industries seeking cost-effective and sustainable solutions for producing advanced biofuels and bio-based products from diverse biomass feedstocks.
